Good suits & expanding Q bids

PITBULLS:

Playing “serious 3NT” allows you to define a new meaning to a jump to game in a 2/1 auction rather than showing weakness by the principle of “fast arrival” . Fred Gittleman advises that you should not splinter or make a Jacoby 2NT bid with a good 5 or 6 card suit on the side . He says bid the 2/1 and then jump to 4 of a major to show a very narrowly defined hand . Also a jump to game instead of a 4th suit forcing can have a narrowly defined meaning and  I suggest the same concept . Points in the suit you responded , 4 trump and nothing else to say . This is the way to describe the “fit showing jump” hand  when not a passed hand. A 2/1 and jump to 3 shows 4 trump and a good suit.

2            4               Qx Kxxx xx AQJ10x        The bid shows 4 trump and no

controls outside of your suit

2            4               AKQxx Kxxx xx xx            Ditto

1            2               x xxxx AKQxxx xx             Do not splinter initially as your

2            3

suit is more important then the singleton Partner can infer good diamonds because you did not splinter initially

1           2                                                           Before serious 3NT , this jump was all weak openers . Now you can define a meaning to it i.e. a “picture

                                                                                   bid”

4                              AQJxx   KQxx   xx  xx        No outside controls or singletons and a minimum

Gittleman has introduced a new concept in Q bidding ( that I like ) based on not bypassing good suits by the partnership with 4 trump. In a Q bidding auction , there is no such thing as a Q bid in partners suit . Instead it shows one of the top 3 honours ( queen gets promoted )  . In addition he says that in a Q bidding auction responder can not Q bid his own suit without having 2 of the top 3 honours . He gives the following examples

EXAMPLE 1:

.KJxxxx

AQx

 Axx

xx

 Qx

AKJ10xx

 Qx

Ax

             1           2

2           3                                Q bidding the Queen gets them to 7NT

                                               4           4NT

EXAMPLE 2

.Kxxx

Jx

 AJ10xxx

KQx

 Kx

AQJxxx

 x

Ax

             1           2

2           3                               Partner bids the serious 3NT to show serious slam interest and then “Q bids” his own suit

3           3NT                             showing  2 of the top 3 honours . With the K filling partners suit , Blackwood gets them to 6

                                               4♣           4

                                               4NT

Gittleman has also defined a Q bid in the trump suit . He says it shows 2 of the top 3 honours . I do not like that as there are other ways of finding trump strength . The return to the trump suit is a Q bidding auction should be just saying I have nothing to say .

 1               2♣

2             2                        According to Fred this would show 2 out of the 3

trump honours since it is a “trump Q bid “

  3

Anyway , I recommend the Pitbulls put these new Q bids in their repertoire
