Hand Evaluation - Transfers in Competition

            Bidding theorists have always had trouble with 2/1 in competition. Since it is advantageous to get your long suits into the fray after a major opening , most experts played jumps in a new suit as natural &  pre-emptive. This idea conflicts with the Standard Edmonton notion of jumps in competition as being splinters after a major opening. Can we have both ? Players familiar with Rubensohl or transfers after a major & T/O dbl , will have no problem. The key concept is to have a Q bid as any splinter.

 

            In the Nov 2006 Bulletin , Eric Kokish says the experts use transfers as a fix for this problem. The only thing you give up is the natural 2NT bid in competition & everybody knows that is not an earth shattering loss. Eric only uses the heart suit as an example. 

 

Kokish gives some example auctions ( applies with 1♠ overcall also except 2NT shows clubs & 1NT natural )

 

1♥-2♠-2NT           all club hands -  super accepts by opener if passing 3♣ is unpalatable

 

1♥-2♠-3♠             Q bid all splinters     -  3NT asks where by opener

 

 1♥-2♠-3♣            all diamond hands – super accepts applicable

 

 1♥-2♠-3♦             limit raise or better in hearts ( transfer into our suit )

 

 1♥-2♠-4♣/4♦       fit showing jump

 

1♥-2♠-X                HCP’s or 2 suits ( can not be a one suited hand )

 

1♥-2♠-3NT           to play

 

 

            Lets try a 1♠ opener & a 2♥ overcall . Can our suits ( any HCP range ) & splinters co-exist ?

 

1♠-2♥-2♠            normal raise

 

1♠-2♥-3♠            simple raise with 4 trump

 

1♠-2♥-3♥            Q bid all splinters  - 3♠ asks where

 

1♠-2♥-2NT          all club hands – super accepts applicable

 

1♠-2♥-3♣            all diamond hands – super accepts applicable

 

1♠-2♥-3♦             transfer into their suit shows limit raise or better in spades       

 

1♠-2♥-4♣/♦         fit showing jump

 

 

What about a minor overcall to our major ?

1♥-2♣-2♦               transfer to our suit - limit raise or better in hearts
