Weak 5-5's 6-4's

PITBULLS:

Tom Gandolfo suggests modifying the relay treatment suggest by Fred Gittleman dealing with 5-5 and 6-4 distributions and the forcing NT . Tom suggests natural bidding as strong and the relay shows the weak hands. This makes the relay more in line with the  Lebensohl thinking of direct being strong and the relay showing the weaker hands . Tom says it also has the advantage of responder being able to Q bid directly .

O.K. in this way of playing the relays – natural bidding shows the strong hands and if you want to get out you relay.

One spade and partner bids 1NT . You rebid 2 and partner bids 2NT . You do  not want to pass 2NT and you do not want to go to game. You bid 3♣ which relays to 3and you bid 3 . This shows the weak 5-5 and partner will act accordingly.

1 and partner bids 1NT . You bid 2♣ and partner bids 2NT . You bid 3C which is a  strong 5-5 ( under a jump shift ) . Partner can now Q bid directly which implies one of  your suits. Tom says if you have a weak 5-5 in the blacks open 1♣ and you will avoid  this auction.

1 and partner bids 1NT . You bid 2♣ and partner bids 2NT . You now bid 3 and it  shows the strong 6-4 ( under jump shift range ) . Responder can Q bid 3 if she is interested in bidder and better things.

1 and partner bids 1NT . You bid 2♣ ( it is always best to show 6-4’s this way )  instead of bidding 2 . If partner has clubs there could be game and  a 2 rebid shuts out the bidding. Partner bids 2NT and you bid 3 which relays to 3 and you pass.

Use the unbid minor as the relay and partner will be put in the picture that you have a weak 5-5 or 6-4.

Lets try an auction with this new understanding.

1 and 1NT . 2 rebid and you bid 2NT . Partner bids 3 which shows the strong  5-5 . You Q bid 3 and partner bids 3 . You bid 4♣ and partner either Blackwoods or leaps to 6. 6 is an excellent contract and usually not reachable after a mere 2  rebid and an invitational 2NT.

Anyway , I like Toms treatment better than Fred Gittlemans ..
